The Prom Tradition

Prom, short for “Promenade”, has only been a tradition in its modern form of limos, tuxes and fancy dresses, and prom court voting since the 1950s. Prom has evolved from the elaborate balls held during the Victorian era by society’s elite. An event for younger people, called the Debutante Ball was similar, but the purpose was for young women to meet appropriate suitors. They wore the finest of attire.

The first proms were middle-class replications of debutante balls. They were less fancy and less expensive versions but functioned identically; allowing teens to meet and dine. But by the 1920s and 30s dining and dancing became a part of these events. By the 1950s, Americans were enjoying affluence and proms became a regular part of high school.

Today, prom is an exciting and anticipated part of a teenager’s life. Dressing up, dining and dancing are highlights of both junior and senior year in most schools around the world!
